What is the disadvantages of excessive addition of water reducer to concrete?

2025-08-26

Water reducer is a commonly used admixture in concrete. However, if added in excessive amounts, it will have various negative impacts on the performance of the concrete, the construction process, and the final quality. The specific drawbacks are as follows:

1. Destruction of concrete workability:

1. Excessive water reducer significantly reduces the loss of slump in concrete, causing it to be overly soft during transportation and pouring. This may lead to segregation (disaggregation of aggregates and mortar) and bleeding (excessive moisture on the surface) during transportation and pouring. For example, pumping concrete may be blocked by segregation, affecting the efficiency of construction.

2. Extended setting time: It will significantly prolong the initial and final setting times of the concrete. In low-temperature environments, it may cause the final setting time of the concrete to exceed 24 hours, which not only affects the normal progress of subsequent processes (such as dismantling forms and curing), but also increases the risks of freezing and being washed by rainwater due to prolonged exposure to harsh conditions.

2. Weakening of concrete mechanical properties:

1. Significant decrease in strength: Excessive water reducer will increase the water-cement ratio in the concrete (actual water consumption is relatively excessive), resulting in an increase in the internal porosity of the hardened concrete and a decrease in structural compactness. Generally, if the water reducer is overused by 10%-20%, the 28-day compressive strength of the concrete may decrease by 10%-30%, seriously affecting the bearing capacity of the structure.

2. Reduced durability: The increase in internal pores will reduce the impermeability, frost resistance, and carbonation resistance of the concrete. For example, in rainy areas, water is prone to seep into the concrete, and when temperature changes, water freezing and expansion may cause cracking; in industrial environments, harmful gases (such as carbon dioxide, chloride ions) are more likely to invade, causing problems such as steel corrosion.

3. Impact on construction costs and quality control:

1. Increase in additional costs: Due to unqualified concrete performance, rework and redraining may be required, not only wasting raw materials (such as cement, sand, and admixtures), but also increasing costs for labor, machinery rental, etc. Moreover, to compensate for the impact of excessive water reducer, additional cement or other adjusting agents may need to be added, further increasing costs.

2. The problems caused by excessive water reducer in concrete have concealment, and some defects (such as internal pores, insufficient strength) may not be revealed until a certain period after construction, laying a long-term hidden danger for the structural safety. For example, if the strength of important structures such as bridges and high-rise buildings is insufficient and causes deformation or collapse, the consequences will be unimaginable.

4. Impact on concrete volume stability:

1. Increased risk of shrinkage cracks: Excessive water reducer will cause greater drying shrinkage and plastic shrinkage during the hardening process of the concrete. Drying shrinkage refers to the volume reduction caused by water evaporation after the concrete hardens, and plastic shrinkage refers to the volume shrinkage caused by the rapid evaporation of surface moisture after pouring and before initial setting. The combined effect of these two shrinkages is likely to cause a large number of cracks on the surface of the concrete, affecting the integrity and appearance of the structure.

2. Excessive addition of water reducer will have adverse effects on concrete from multiple aspects, including workability, mechanical properties, durability, and construction costs. Therefore, in construction, the dosage of water reducer should be strictly controlled according to the mix ratio to ensure that the concrete quality meets the design requirements.
